I Dreamt of Being Me is a 501c3 nonprofit in Durham, North Carolina. Our mission is to strengthen both the mental and physical health outcomes of high-need communities of color.
OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS NEED OUR SUPPORT TO BUILD HEALTHIER LIVES, DEVELOP PATHWAYS TO LIVING LONGER AND ENJOYING BETTER RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS.
DID YOU KNOW, COMPARED TO THEIR WHITE PEERS, BLACK COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE:
25% more likely to die from heart disease?
72% more likely to be diabetic?
23% more liley to be obese?
WE HAVE TO DO A BETTER JOB OF TALKING ABOUT HEALTH IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
Only 1 in 3 African Americans who need mental health care receive it
BARRIERS TO MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR BLACK COMMUNITY MEMBERS INCLUDE:
Stigma in our communities
Distrust in the system
Lack of culturally competent providers and programs
WE ENVISION A WORLD WHERE PEOPLE OF COLOR ARE NO LONGER DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECTED BY HIGH-RISK CONDITIONS AND PREVENTABLE DISEASES.
I Dreamt of Being Me was founded by Dr. Malik Muhammad, a scholar, psychologist, fitness enthusiast, and committed member of the North Carolina Community.
Founded, in direct response to the impact health disparities have within communities of color, Dr. Muhammad created a unique program to combat the disparities that plague the community.
I Dreamt of Being Me’s primary program is Healthier Together—a pilot-phase operation that pairs volunteers, trained as health coaches, with members in the community that are high-risk for conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.
